About this stay
Over a hundred years ago, in the summer of 1924, a man named Silas was driving a delivery truck down the dirt road right behind you. His truck blew a tire, stranding him out here in what was then just an abandoned, weed-choked valley. While he was waiting for help, he crawled through a broken fence, dug his hands into the earth, and realized something incredible—this forgotten dirt was some of the richest, sweetest soil in Iowa. Silas never left. He traded his broken truck on the spot for a rusty shovel, cleared this brush by hand, and planted his very first crop of heirloom corn. Today, we are going to walk in Silas’s footsteps. We’ll visit the original 1920s homestead, taste the exact same sweet heirloom corn his family has been harvesting for generations, and see how a broken tire turned into a century-old agricultural legacy. Grab your hats, and let’s head down the trail!"

In 1924, Silas’s delivery truck blew a tire beside an abandoned, weed-choked Iowa valley. Stranded for hours, he wandered past the broken fence and ran the dark, heavy soil through his tired fingers. It was rich, sweet, and practically begging for seed. He never looked back. Silas traded his busted truck for a single rusty shovel, cleared the brush by hand, and planted heirloom corn. Nine decades later, the family still calls it The Open Gate Farm.
